I’ve been taking lessons with Maki for a while now and she’s been absolutely lovely and extremely patient. I feel like I have improved in my speaking ability quite a bit since I started taking lessons with Maki. I feel more confident to actually try even if I make many mistakes trying. Maki is highly patient even when I stutter or take a while to make the sentence. She’s also very encouraging and it makes me want to continue to try harder and improve more. At times I have days where I struggle to speak more than others for some reason but Maki simply encourages and is really patient with me. I’ve also learnt a lot with her grammar wise. She explains the grammar points in a way that is easy to understand. Some grammar structures that I used to struggle with have been made so much clearer by Maki’s explanations as well a the speaking practices. I’m very grateful to have found such a lovely tutor and well worth the money :)))

Maki-sensei is a very detailed and patient teacher who keeps class engaging by combining structured grammar and vocabulary lessons with everyday discussion topics and things I enjoy. I have learned a lot of new vocabulary from everyday topics like cooking to more difficult conversations such as world events and even slang. I've mentioned that I like writing and music, so she was very kind to incorporate creative exercises and I've even been able to analyze and interpret one of my favorite Japanese songs one lesson. Maki-sensei also provides notes and tips on mistakes I make while speaking, and I have been able to create flashcards to study and refer back because of this. These days, I can walk away from my computer while watching something in Japanese, and understand most of what is being said without subtitles, which is a big improvement from when I first started. Maki-sensei keeps class engaging so I can easily retain a lot of information. Thank you for all of your help and guidance!

I started studying Japanese in earnest at the start of May this year, and soon after I booked a lesson with Maki, not really knowing what to expect. Since then, I believe I've booked over 30 lessons with her as of writing this. My Japanese, especially speaking ability (and my confidence to speak, which is almost just as important) has improved tremendously. Maki is able to both focus on grammar and free flowing conversations. She, mid conversation, diligently makes notes of vocabulary, grammar, and things like word choice in a shared document which I've found immensely helpful -- not only for review but to see how much I've improved. Conversation is very relaxing and free flowing with Maki, even while still at the stage of learning where you struggle to express yourself. She is always patient and non-judgemental, and I'm glad she was one of the first teachers I tried out.
