Hannah Liu

When I started learning with Hannah, my Mandarin was extremely rusty after years of disuse. Six months later, I can say she’s one of the best teachers I’ve ever had the pleasure of learning from. She was quick to recognize my skill level and work from there. When it comes to teaching, she’s always patient and careful to explain concepts clearly before moving on. Although we work from a textbook, she sets aside ample time for conversational practice to exercise speaking and listening. Most impressively, she’s an incredible conversationalist, and is mindful of what terms I know. Because of that, she’s able to start engaging conversations at a level I can understand and respond to, and often tailors them around vocabulary we’ve recently covered. Working with her is a pleasure, and I’m very happy with how far I’ve come in learning Mandarin over the past months. Overall, Hannah is an excellent teacher who knows how to engage with her students to promote effective immersive learning.

I have taken lessons with many different Chinese teachers and I think Hannah is one of the best out there. She always makes sure to only speak Chinese during our lessons so that I get lots of listening practice, and even though my Chinese level is still very low, I never have trouble understanding because she always explains things very well using words I can understand, and is very patient when I need to hear things a second or third time. Our lessons involve a good balance of reading, speaking and listening, working through activities as well as just general conversation practice. I believe I have learned a lot since my first lesson 谢谢你老师 :)

I am a heritage Mandarin speaker who does not fit into a traditional student category, and I wanted someone to be able to chat with to keep up my language skills and work on my fluency. Hannah was very easy to talk to and was able to guide me with what I needed help with expressing. I look forward to more sessions with her. Thank you Hannah!

The past couple months we have been working on improving my enunciation. We usually read a news article each class with and without shadowing, and with and without pinyin. Of the 30+ teachers I’ve talked with on italki, she is the most methodical and patient.
