Hello! (",) My name is Nick and a big welcome to my Italki teaching profile, I'm glad you are here. I am a British Citizen living in South Africa and I have been teaching English for 7 years. About me; I enjoy hiking in nature, reading, doing meditation and yoga and meeting interesting people from around the world.

I may not be your usual online English teacher. Most of my English students are Uni students, young professionals studying for IELTS, businessman and even non-native English teachers. The reason for this is that I enjoy having in-depth conversations and I feel I can only really do this with adults. I love teaching IELTS students I am very easy going, relaxed, patient and flexible. I think the thing that most defines me as an English teacher is that I really enjoy connecting with my students. I have several students who I have been teaching for many months, sometimes even years. I have built up some beautiful relationships with my most loyal students and I would consider them my friends :)Mijn lessen en manier van lesgeven
I have a few different lesson options.
I have a lesson that focuses only on conversation practice and I have an entirely different lesson for kids and children that focuses on listening, speaking, reading and writing.
I have a course that prepares IELTS students for their writing and speaking tests.
I also provide business lessons that help people with upcoming job interviews or presentations and I am a whiz at proofreading English writing.
My teaching style is easy going but I do like to test my students every few lessons, especially in terms of their vocabulary.Mijn lesmateriaal

Language InstructorAs an English teacher at this school I taught ages from 5 - 60 years old. I created interesting and fun lessons, helped organise English camps and workshops, reviewed and marked assignments and essays, provided critical feedback to keen learners, achieved discipline through a variety of positive-reinforcement methods and much more. This experience solidified my ability to lead a group of people towards a future learning goal.

Language InstructorUpon arrival in Cape Town I worked in TEFL education. My work involved teaching classes of up to 15 students; preparation of teaching materials, effective presentation of principles, efficient communication with all students, marking of assignments, strategizing with other teachers and managerial staff, attending weekly brainstorming meetings and so on. I also assisted with the outdoor activities program.

Online English TeacherI have been offering online classes for the past year and a half to students from all over the world. My focus is largely on conversation-based learning, vocabulary and sentence structure. I love teaching on Italki and will be doing so for many years.

Psychology TutorAs Tutor I facilitated weekly tutorials on course content, discussed academic assignments, received, marked and provided feedback on tasks, recorded attendance, liaised with other members of academic staff, promoted student well-being and a healthy academic environment and ensured follow-up on unsatisfactory progress. This was a highly rewarding position which I enjoyed very much.

Broadcasting Tutor & Executive ProducerAs Tutor and Executive Producer I mentored a large group of 2nd year Journalism students. I explained the basics of radio production; recording, interviewing & editing skills. I supervised time-management, team strategy & cohesion, marked assignments, corrected vocal errors, provided critical feedback to learners and much more.

Course ParticipantAs a participant on this course I engaged with French Congolese students about the inner workings of the English language. I communicated the importance of pronunciation in speech and punctuation, grammar and style in writing. I marked and provided critical feedback on written assignments. This was a highly fruitful and stimulating experience.

Language instructorAt Avalon I taught only children ranging from 6 - 16 years old. A focus was placed on ensuring lessons were fun, engaging and interactive with the smaller children. The older children were taught mainly TOEIC and this was very rewarding. Responsibilities included teaching, marking assignments, verbal assessments, providing pronunciation feedback and more.

Activities CoordinatorI researched and created a detailed and fun activities schedule for the English students, made bookings, received payments, provided informed advice to students, accompanied students on hikes and tours ensuring everyone was satisfied and having a good time.

Founder/CEOI run an adventure company specializing in hiking & trekking. I oversee all aspects of the company such as marketing, social media, finances, payment of guides, receiving bookings, transport arrangements, organizing refreshments and so on. We do tours for all the main English language schools in Cape Town providing students not only amazing outdoors experiences, but also teaching them new and interesting vocabulary along the way.

For people who are wondering whether if you are going to book Nick’s lesson:
Nick is an outstanding English teacher. He is patient, kind, understandable and thoughtful. He understands that as a non-native speaker, it's not easy for us to speak out loud. You can always trust Nick's ability to help you to improve and gain confidence in the meantime. Despite the truth that, sometimes, practicing English is miserable, you can have so much fun in each lesson.

We've been having classes since July. I've found Nick a very reliable teacher who pays attention to your pronunciation and with whom you can improve this skill :). I decided on Native Speaking Training: Improve your fluency fast! which was an excellent choice. What I like is the logical structure of the class and the range of activities Nick chooses to keep me talking :D.We've covered so far topics such us friendship, self-development, career, money, RSA, sports. Being open to my ideas Nick left me the opportunity to decide on issues we will be discussing which I find really motivating. I've found Nick a professional and sometimes an exigent tutor and equally a carrying and supportive person.What's more, Nick can prepare you for IELTS,TOEFL tests if you consider taking one of these.
