I’m a native Finnish teacher from Helsinki, Finland.
I live in Japan, and I speak Finnish, Japanese, English and Swedish. I've always had a passion for languages, both teaching and learning!
I majored Japanese language and culture in university, and after graduating I continued my studies in Japan. I have experienced many different learning techniques, and I’m not shy to say that I’m a slow learner. Practice makes perfect!
Teaching Finnish in Japan creates a sense of connection between my life in Japan and my home country, and I want to share Finnish culture with my students. Celebrating the Finnish holidays in Japan is important for me!Ik als leerkracht
I have teaching experience for Japanese students online and face-to-face, individual students and groups up to 11 persons in private language schools.
I believe that speaking practice should be prioritized as early as possible in learning process. Using new words while speaking is a great way for memorizing them. I know how scary it is to speak in a language that you have just started studying. Don’t worry about making mistakes, we will practice at your space!
I always tailor my lessons according to my students’ needs and interests, either it’s for applying for a school or work, for daily or traveling usage, or other.

My approach to learning is that it should be as fun as possible. I hope you can learn about Finnish culture, customs, history and modern society in my lessons. My lessons’ emphasis is on the practical skills — communicating in Finnish.
I love to teach my students phrases that native Finnish speakers use a lot. We can study spoken language or even Helsinki dialect together!

I'm not at all surprised that Maija has such a high student retention ratio (number of lessons to students is 10:1). Maija strikes the perfect balance of being an encouraging conversationalist and correcting key mistakes.

Maija is a wonderful teacher. We only had one lesson, but she prepared a lot and furthermore she gave me some task beforehand, so the lesson was structured, even though it was the 1st our meeting.
If you are looking for qualified teacher who is passionate about languages, she is the one you are looking for😃

Maija is awesome! I was pretty nervous for my first lesson, but she made me feel very comfortable and I left our call feeling a lot more confident. She sent over the lesson materials beforehand so I knew exactly what to expect, and she even gave me some helpful homework to keep the momentum going. I'm already looking forward to our next session!
