You'll be truly shocked to learn how many different terms there are for kinship relations in Turkish!

Akrabalık Terimleri (Kinship Terms)

sister (both elder and younger; and just in traditional regions)

1- brother's wife; 2- mother's brother's wife; 3- father's brother's wife (we use 'yenge' for all of them. Actually, if there is wife of somebody, we say 'yenge' in a deep respect...)

a woman's husband's brother's wife (Yes! not a joke!)

1- sister's husband; 2- mother's sister's husband; 3- father's sister's husband (like 'yenge', 'enişte' is a general term for kin's husband.)

son's wife's parent; daughter's husband's parent

wife's or husband's mother (mother-in-law)

wife's or husband's father (father-in-law)

Literally means 'half of mother', which is a methaphorical term for 'mother's sister' for stressing the importance of her for child's care.

step mother; literally means 'motherhood', which shows the function of the new woman in the family that she came in.

Ms. (But, 'bayan' is a kind of banned term in higher intellectual circles in society, because the term 'bayan' came from 'bay', means 'man'. Educated women don't want to hear the term in daily life.)

a girl who came to the family in early age because of poverty; and was a kind of servent girl in the family

sister (this old term was used in Ottoman period)

boy (just used in Thrace region; but I like :)

'kirve' is a man who assists the little boy for all 'sünnet' rituel time. As for 'sünnet', enough to see the pictures on google. I don't recommend!

'kuma' is the dark side of our culture. 'kuma' is the name of the women who married with the same man.

old mother and father for youngers; it's rude but has a kind of sympathy. Friends use the tern for each other sometimes.
