Things you hear French people say when they're confused, lost and lazy.

Les tics de language (verbal tics)

This expresses: "what?" In the most uninterested and unimpressed way to something we didn't understand.

"So". Usually before "du coup" which gives : "donc, du coup" at the beginning of an explanation.

Euh (hesitation) / Euh (judgement) / Euh (processing)

"Oh, okay." If you say it fast, you'll sound nice. If you willingly separate the words, you'll sound judgemental. But if you say "aaaahhh ok" you sound like it all finally clicked in your head.

"So". "Du coup" and "donc" mean the same thing but the first one is informal and it became teachers enemy in France.

"Well", or nothing. Only at the beginning of the sentence. It's unnecessary and makes the sentence sound more lazy. If your "bah" is too harsh or loud, that'll make you rude.

No worries / It's fine. It's the shorten version of "ne t'inquiète pas".

"Totally". It's the accepted version of "de ouf".

Adding "mais" in front of words of agreement like "mais oui", "mais de ouf", "mais c'est clair", makes an even bigger emphasis. Can't doubt how much you agree with me anymore. Same for negatives (mais non).

It does mean "I find", though we use it in a way that expresses thoughts or judgements. "Je trouve pas ça ouf" / "I think it's lame".

"Really". This one can be used by everyone, but if my parents said it, it would be to mock me. All contexts work : C'est grave moche / J'ai grave envie d'y aller / C'est grave loin.

"A thing", but it's not "une chose", it's the most generic thing possible. Everything works: a concept, an object, an idea, a bug, something we don't know the name, definition or shape of is "un truc".

"There you go". You can say it to show something. Or as a lazy French person who doesn't want to express their thoughts, or feels uncomfortable at the end of a sentence, or wants people to know they "knew it!".

If once wasn't enough, we say it twice really fast. Sometimes, we say it once, then a pause, then two more really fast as a sign we're processing.

This one is recent, it means "great" and we stole it from English indeed.

Another variation of "great". We used to have way better words like "c'est tout à fait plaisant" but now we just say "super".

Same as in English. You can add "grave" to say "grave cool" and you'll sound young and edgy.

Though everyone uses it, as it means "incredible", young French say it with a low and rapid tone and seem way less intense.

"Great". "Génial" became "gégé". I had to add this one because I love saying it, it's starting to disappear but I think it shouldn't.

Gives the intensity of an adjective. None of these are French this is why they're in this list.

It's the cut version of "enfin", which means "I mean" or "well". In contexts like "I mean, I get it but like-" / "'fin, ok je vois mais genre-"

"I get it". You'll find the verb "voir" in many unexpected places in French.

"Definitely". This is is the verlan of "de fou" which we also said at some point but decided wasn't good enough.
