Afghan Greeting

'salaam alaykum' means "Hi/Hello. 
'alaykum salaam' is the reply for 'salaam alaykum'.

'shumaa' means 'you'. It is more formal and respectful. We use it when addressing someone who is older than us. 

'too' means 'you'. It is more informal, and we use it with family and friends.

A: shumaa chitor astin? = How are you?
B: ma khob astum. = I'm good/ok. 

A: too chitor astee? = How are you?
B: ma khob astum. = I'm good/ok.
