The summer holidays are a wonderful opportunity for children to relax, play, and spend time with family. However, long breaks from school can sometimes lead to a loss of language skills. The good news is that helping your child improve their English during the holidays does not have to feel like school. In fact, some of the most effective learning happens when children are having fun.

Here are some simple and enjoyable ways to support your child's English learning over the summer.

1. Make Reading Part of the Daily Routine

Reading is one of the best ways to develop vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar. Encourage your child to read something every day, even if it is only for 15–20 minutes.

Choose books that match your child's interests rather than focusing only on educational material. Whether they enjoy mysteries, fantasy, animals, sports, or comics, reading for pleasure helps build a positive relationship with English.

For younger children, reading together can be especially beneficial. Ask questions about the story and discuss the characters to develop comprehension skills.

2. Watch English Content Together

Movies, cartoons, documentaries, and educational YouTube videos can provide valuable exposure to natural English.

Instead of simply watching passively, try asking questions such as:

● What happened in the story?

● Who was your favourite character?

● What do you think will happen next?

These conversations help children practise speaking and improve their confidence.

3. Encourage Real Conversations

Children learn languages by using them. Look for opportunities to have conversations in English throughout the day.

You might discuss:

● Holiday plans

● Favourite books or films

● A recent outing

● Interesting things they learned

Do not worry about correcting every mistake. The goal is to help children feel comfortable expressing themselves. Too many corrections can sometimes make children reluctant to speak.

4. Turn Learning Into Games

Children often learn best when they do not realise they are learning.

Try activities such as:

● Word searches

● Scrabble

● Charades

● Twenty Questions

● Story-building games

● Vocabulary scavenger hunts

Games help children practise language skills while keeping learning enjoyable and stress-free.

5. Keep a Holiday Journal

Encourage your child to write a few sentences each day about their experiences. They can write about:

● What they did that day

● A memorable event

● Their thoughts and feelings

● A place they visited

For younger learners, even a few simple sentences are valuable practice. They can also add drawings and photos to make the journal more engaging.

6. Use English in Everyday Activities

Language learning does not have to happen at a desk. Everyday situations provide excellent opportunities for practice.

For example:

● Follow a recipe together in English.

● Make shopping lists.

● Read signs and menus.

● Play board games using English instructions.

These real-world experiences help children see English as a useful communication tool rather than just a school subject.

7. Find a Conversation Partner

Many children understand more English than they are able to speak. Regular conversation practice helps bridge this gap.

Working with an English tutor can provide a supportive environment where children can develop speaking skills, build confidence, and receive personalised guidance based on their age, interests, and learning goals.

Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

One of the most important things parents can do is create a positive learning environment. Children are more likely to continue learning when they feel encouraged and successful.

The summer holidays do not need to be filled with worksheets and formal lessons. A combination of reading, conversation, games, and meaningful experiences can make a significant difference while still allowing children to enjoy their break.

By making English a natural part of everyday life, parents can help their children return to school with stronger language skills, greater confidence, and a love of learning that lasts far beyond the summer holidays.
