Welcome! In this trial lesson, we will get to know each other and find out about your language objectives.

The aim of these lessons is for you to:

- improve your fluency
- enrich your vocabulary by learning new words and expressions
- increase your grammatical and lexical accuracy
- raise your ability to discuss a wider range of subjects

We will discuss topics that interest you and that are relevant to your life and your academic or professional objectives. 

In conversational classes, you should be speaking as much as possible - you are mainly here to improve your speaking, not your listening, which you can do for free on YouTube! My role will be to encourage you to speak, teach you new words and expressions, and provide corrections and advice.

If you would like to improve your academic English with a published academic author,  you have come to the right place.

Adapted to your specific requirements and covering the key skills of academic reading, writing, listening and speaking, these lessons will:

- develop your academic English vocabulary;

- improve your ability to construct coherent arguments, both in written and spoken English;

- improve your critical-thinking skills;

- teach you to be a more effective reader, whether you are reading for gist, detail or specific information;

- improve the structure and tone of your written and spoken academic English; and

- increase the overall accuracy and quality of your academic English.

These classes include homework (optional but recommended!).

I have a PhD in political science from the University of London, and my book on British politics was published by Palgrave Macmillan, a major international academic publisher, in 2020. It has been endorsed by leading academics as a 'key text', a 'powerful, critical account', and as 'illuminating and scholarly'. 

In addition, I have a Master's degree in International Relations and a Bachelor's degree in Politics and International Relations. I have also worked as an editor, including on academic texts written by non-native English authors.

In this course, each lesson will be centred around a particular topic and include teaching and practice of:

- listening, reading, writing or speaking;

- vocabulary and grammar.

Language-learning works best when it's based on interesting topics. The lessons in this course will cover a variety of topics - depending on your own personal interests - ranging from film, food, fashion and football, to climate change, technology and current affairs. 

In this way, you will be able to enrich your vocabulary and become more confident in your use of English in diverse contexts.

These classes include homework (optional but recommended!).

General English - structured lessons covering writing, speaking, reading and listening

In-class editing and proofreading of emails, letters, essays, articles, websites, job/university applications, and other documents.

I have worked as a professional editor and proofreader, editing documents for the UK Parliament (as a Hansard reporter) and for university students and academics.

Please note: 

* All editing/proofreading will take place in the class and you must be present in the class. I cannot work on your document if you are not present. We will edit and proofread as much as we can in the class time.

* I can edit your document and give you advice on it, but I cannot write or rewrite it.

* While I will check and improve your document to the best of my ability during the class time, no editor can offer a guarantee that no errors will remain in your document. The more time we have to work on your text, the better the end result will be.
