Learning Tips Before Your Cantonese Journey

"Der Überraschungskuchen"

Es war ein sonniger Samstagmorgen, und Emily hatte Geburtstag. Sie wachte mit einem Lächeln auf, weil sie wusste, dass ihre besten Freunde, Mia und Lucas, zu ihrem Geburtstag kommen würden. Emily freute sich auf ihren Besuch und auf die gemeinsame Zeit, die sie verbringen würden.

Die Sonne schien hell, als Mia und Lucas endlich ankamen. Emily begrüßte sie mit einem breiten Lächeln an der Tür und umarmte sie herzlich. Sie wusste, dass sie einen tollen Tag zusammen haben würden.

Emily, Mia und Lucas verbrachten den Tag damit, lustige Spiele im Garten zu spielen. Sie tobten herum, spielten Verstecken und lachten über lustige Geschichten. Es war ein Tag voller Freude und Gelächter.

Nachdem sie draußen gespielt hatten, gingen sie ins Haus, um Emily's Geburtstagskuchen zu genießen. Als Emily die Kerzen ausblies und sich etwas wünschte, sangen Mia und Lucas fröhlich "Happy Birthday". Dann schnitten sie den Kuchen in Stücke und genossen jede köstliche Bissen.

Der Tag verging viel zu schnell, aber Emily war überglücklich. Sie fühlte sich so glücklich und dankbar, ihre besten Freunde an ihrem Geburtstag bei sich zu haben. Als Mia und Lucas sich schließlich verabschiedeten, versprachen sie, bald wiederzukommen, um mehr Abenteuer zu erleben.

粤语中的「第四声＋第四声」音调组合（Tone Pair 4–4）对母语是普通话的学习者来说常常很难掌握。因为粤语的第四声和普通话的第三声在音高上很接近。但普通话中有「变调规则」，比如“洗脸”（xǐ liǎn）常常读作“xí liǎn”，学习者习惯了一个字自动变成第二声。在粤语中就没有这种变化，所以连续发出两个低降调的音会让人不习惯。本集我们将一起练习这些容易读错的发音组合，进行短时间而集中的训练！

Tone Pair 4–4 in Cantonese can be tricky for Mandarin speakers because the pitch of Cantonese Tone 4 is similar to Mandarin Tone 3. However, Mandarin has tone sandhi rules where Tone 3 changes to Tone 2 in words like 洗臉 (xǐ liǎn → xí liǎn), so Mandarin speakers aren't used to keeping two low tones in a row. In this episode, we’ll tackle this challenging pair with short but focused pronunciation practice.

Why we need to protect polar bears

Polar bears are being increasingly threatened by the effects of climate change, but their disappearance could have far-reaching consequences. They are uniquely adapted to the extreme conditions of the Arctic Circle, where temperatures can reach -40°C. One reason for this is that they have up to 11 centimetres of fat underneath their skin. Humans with comparative levels of adipose tissue would be considered obese and would be likely to suffer from diabetes and heart disease. Yet the polar bear experiences no such consequences.

A 2014 study by Shi Ping Liu and colleagues sheds light on this mystery. They compared the genetic structure of polar bears with that of their closest relatives from a warmer climate, the brown bears. This allowed them to determine the genes that have allowed polar bears to survive in one of the toughest environments on Earth. Liu and his colleagues found the polar bears had a gene known as APoB, which reduces levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) – a form of ‘bad’ cholesterol. In humans, mutations of this gene are associated with increased risk of heart disease. Polar bears may therefore be an important study model to understand heart disease in humans.
