The first twenty seconds and the last twenty seconds of a conversation are the most rule-governed moments in any language, and they are almost never taught — because native speakers do not know they are following rules. Start with the surprise: Malayalam has no everyday word for hello. നമസ്കാരം (namaskaaram) exists and is a real greeting, but between ordinary people going about their day nobody uses it. It would feel like opening a chat with a neighbour by saying "I bid you good day." So a Kerala conversation opens with a question instead: സുഖമാണോ? (sukhamaano) are you well? — the safest general opener. Answer: സുഖമാണ്, നിങ്ങൾക്കോ? എന്താ വിശേഷം? (enthaa vishesham) what's the news? — the everyday one between people who know each other. Answer: പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ഒന്നുമില്ല, nothing in particular. എങ്ങോട്ടാ? (engottaa) where to? — and this startles foreigners. It is not an interrogation. It is a greeting, and the expected answer is vague and cheerful: അതാ, അവിടം വരെ, oh, just up to there. You are not required to disclose your destination. ചോറ് കഴിച്ചോ? (choru kazhicho) have you eaten? — the deepest one, asked at all hours.
