Talking About the Past — Telling Your Own Story in Malayalam | Learn Malayalam #139
Opis
At some point a Malayali will ask you a real question about your life. Not a placing question — a real one. Why did you leave your country. What was your father like. How did you meet your husband. In that moment you want more than a phrasebook. This class builds the machinery for narrative.
THE SIMPLE PAST — EVENTS
ഞാൻ ജനിച്ചു I was born · ഞാൻ വളർന്നു I grew up · ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചു I studied
ഞാൻ ജോലി ചെയ്തു I worked · ഞാൻ വന്നു I came · ഞാൻ പോയി I went
ഞാൻ കണ്ടു I met, I saw · ഞാൻ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു I got married
THE PAST CONTINUOUS — THE SITUATION AROUND THEM
ഞാൻ ജോലി ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു I was working
ഞങ്ങൾ അവിടെ താമസിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു we were living there
THE HABITUAL PAST — THE TENSE OF CHILDHOOD
ഞാൻ പോകുമായിരുന്നു I used to go · ഞങ്ങൾ കളിക്കുമായിരുന്നു we used to play
അമ്മ ഉണ്ടാക്കുമായിരുന്നു mother used to make · അച്ഛൻ പറയുമായിരുന്നു father used to say
The future ending plus the "was" ending is how Malayalam says used to.
TIME ANCHORS
ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ in childhood · പണ്ട് long ago · അക്കാലത്ത് at that time
ആദ്യം at first · പിന്നീട് later · ഒടുവിൽ finally
Those are the skeleton of any story.
THE TURNING POINT
അപ്പോഴാണ് that was when · അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് that is why
A narrative is not a list of events; it is a set of turning points, and the focus construction is how Malayalam marks one.
THE QUESTIONS YOU WILL BE ASKED
നിങ്ങൾ എവിടെയാണ് വളർന്നത്? where did you grow up?
ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ എങ്ങനെയായിരുന്നു? what was it like when you were young?
എങ്ങനെയാണ് പരിചയപ്പെട്ടത്? how did you meet?
എന്തുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഇവിടെ വന്നത്? why did you come here?
