You will forget some of your Malayalam. Here is why that is not failure. This is the last class of the expanded course, and it teaches nothing new. Instead it sets out four things that matter once the lessons stop: forgetting and how fast it comes back, being willing to be bad in public, what Malayalam actually gives an outsider, and what all the comparisons with other languages added up to. You also get the sentence to use whenever a Malayali answers you in English: ഞാൻ മലയാളം പഠിക്കുകയാണ് (njaan malayaalam padikkukayaanu), I am learning Malayalam, then മലയാളത്തിൽ പറയാമോ? (malayaalathil parayaamo?), can you say it in Malayalam? Key Malayalam words for this topic: ഞാൻ മലയാളം പഠിക്കുകയാണ് (njaan malayaalam padikkukayaanu) – I am learning Malayalam മലയാളത്തിൽ പറയാമോ? (malayaalathil parayaamo?) – could you say it in Malayalam? ഒന്നുകൂടി പറയാമോ? (onnukoodi parayaamo?) – could you say it once more? പതുക്കെ (pathukke) – slowly ഇതിന് മലയാളത്തിൽ എന്താ പറയുക? (ithinu malayaalathil enthaa parayuka?) – what is this called in Malayalam? കുറച്ച് കുറച്ച് (kurachu kurachu) – little by little എന്നും (ennum) – every day, always സംസാരിക്കുക (samsaarikkuka) – to speak ശ്രമിക്കുക (shramikkuka) – to try എന്താ? (enthaa?) – what? (colloquial) In this class: • Why you come back at around sixty percent, not zero • Tolerance for embarrassment matters more than aptitude • The English-reply problem, and the sentence that answers it • Malayalam as access: from accommodated visitor to someone who took the trouble Quizzes below.
