I sitdown with Carl Honoré is a bestselling author, broadcaster and two-time TED speaker. He is also the voice of the Slow Movement. 

After working with street children in Brazil, Carl covered Europe and South America for the Economist, Observer, Miami Herald, Houston Chronicle, National Post (Canada), Time and other publications. 

His first book, In Praise of Slow, chronicles the global trend toward putting on the brakes in everything from work to food to parenting. The Financial Times said it is “to the Slow Movement what Das Kapital is to communism”.

Carl’s second book, Under Pressure explores how to raise and educate children in a fast world and was hailed by Time as a “gospel of the Slow Parenting movement”.

Carl’s third book, The Slow Fix, explores how to tackle complex problems in every walk of life, from health and relationships to business and politics, without falling for superficial, short-term quick fixes.

His fourth book, Bolder: How To Age Better And Feel Better About Ageing, is a spirited manifesto against ageism.

Carl recently published his first children’s book, It’s The Journey Not the Destination
Published in 36 languages, Carl has landed on bestseller lists in many countries. 

In Praise of Slow was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week and the inaugural choice for the Huffington Post Book Club. It also featured in a British TV sitcom, Argentina’s version of Big Brother and a TV commercial for the Motorola tablet. 

Under Pressure was shortlisted for the Writers’ Trust Award, the top prize for non-fiction in Canada. 

Bolder was also a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week as well as a Reader’s Digest (UK) Book of the Month.

Carl featured in a series for BBC Radio 4 called The Slow Coach in which he helped frazzled, over-scheduled people slow down. He also presented a television show called Frantic Family Rescue on Australia’s ABC 1.

Carl lives in London. While researching his first book on slowness he was slapped with a speeding ticket.

In this episode, I’ll share some interesting knowledge about the names of cherry in Chinese! You’ll not only discover the origins of these names but also learn some fun new vocabulary along the way：

樱桃 (yīng táo)
中文解释：一种小而圆的水果，通常呈红色或深红色，味道甜美。
英文解释：A small, round fruit typically red or dark red in color, with a sweet taste.

车厘子 (chē lí zi)
中文解释：一种进口樱桃，通常较大，味道较甜，常用于高端市场。
英文解释：A type of imported cherry, usually larger and sweeter, often marketed in high-end markets.

华北 (huá běi)
中文解释：中国的一个地理区域，包括北京、天津、河北等省市，位于中国北方。
英文解释：A geographical region in China, including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei etc located in the northern part of the country.

江浙 (jiāng zhè)
中文解释：指的是江苏省和浙江省，位于中国东部，经济发达。
英文解释：Refers to Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, located in eastern China, known for their economic development.

音译 (yīn yì)
中文解释：将外国语言的发音按汉语拼音或其他方式进行转写。
英文解释：Transliteration of foreign language pronunciation into Chinese pinyin or another system.

引种 (yǐn zhòng)
中文解释：引进外地或国外的植物种类进行种植或繁殖。
英文解释：To introduce new plant species from other regions or countries for cultivation or breeding.

How do you call it? 樱桃or车厘子 ？

A smile, a “hello” and a “how are you” will make an immediate
positive impression. Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles, and
you will soon be saying “hello” and smiling with more people than
you can remember.
TOP TIP: When referring to the self in Thai, as in “I”, there is a
form for male and a form for female, just as there is with khrup and
ka. Men say “Phom”, and women say “Chan”, or “Di-chan” when
speaking very politely.
There are also forms where age is concerned. When speaking to
an elder, you should refer to that person as “Pii”. To get the
attention of an elder you would say, “Pii khrup/ka”. To get the
attention of a younger person you would say, “Nong khrup/ka”.
When referring to a child you can use the word “Luuk”, which
literally means child.

Forget bullet points and dry statistics. Capturing attention and sparking action requires a different approach: storytelling.  Effective communication transforms you from an information provider into a captivating storyteller, weaving a narrative that resonates with your audience.

Why Stories?

Humans are wired for stories. They tap into emotions, create a sense of connection, and make information more memorable.  A well-crafted story in a business presentation can:

Illustrate complex concepts: Imagine explaining a new marketing strategy. By weaving a story about a customer's journey, you make the strategy relatable and engaging.
Highlight challenges and solutions: Business is full of obstacles. Share a story about overcoming a past hurdle, showcasing your problem-solving expertise.
Inspire and motivate: The most powerful stories evoke emotions and ignite action. Use a story of a customer's success to inspire others to do the same.

Identify the Hero: Every story needs a hero. In a business context, the hero could be your customer, your team, or even your company itself.
Define the Obstacle: What challenges does the hero face? This could be a market disruption, a competitor's strategy, or an internal obstacle to overcome.
Showcase the Journey: How does the hero overcome the obstacles? This is where you highlight your product, service, or strategy in action.
Deliver a Satisfying Resolution: What is the positive outcome of the story? Did the hero achieve their goal? Leave your audience with a sense of accomplishment and hope.
Storytelling in Action:

Imagine pitching your innovative new software to potential investors. Instead of a dry presentation full of technical jargon, weave a story about a struggling small business frustrated with outdated software.  Highlight how your product transformed their operations, leading to increased efficiency and growth.  This narrative approach connects on an emotional level, making your pitch more memorable and impactful.
