日本では、年のはじめに「年賀状（ねんがじょう）」、夏には「暑中見舞い」や「残暑見舞い」を送る習慣があります。今日は「暑中見舞い」と「残暑見舞い」の話をします。

「暑中お見舞い申し上げます
年々暑さが厳しくなり、今年もすでに全国で最高気温記録が更新されましたが、いかがお凌ぎでしょうか。
このような気候ですが、お陰様で、私たちは涼を得ながら元気に過ごしております。
酷暑の折、夏バテなどなさいませんよう心よりお祈りいたしております。
　　令和４年　盛夏」
これは夏のご挨拶におくる暑中見舞いのはがきに書いた文です。

年賀状は　年のはじめの挨拶をはがきに書い
その始まりは　平安時代と言われています。平安時代は西暦794年から1185年です。
平安時代の貴族が年の始めの挨拶の手紙を送ったことが始まりで、今でも日本人は年賀状を送っています。

では、夏のあいさつの暑中見舞いや残暑見舞いはどうでしょうか。
これは、お盆に里帰りするときに　先祖へのお供えものを持って帰っていたことと関係があります。　
それが、お世話になった人に贈り物をする習慣に変わりました。やがて手紙だけになったのが暑中見舞いで、私たちは親戚、友人、知人などにおくっています。
（お盆：　一般的に8月13日から16日の4日間／里帰：自分の故郷や両親のいる家に帰ること）

暑中見舞いは、暑さの厳しい季節に、友人知人、お世話になった人、なかなか会えない人などに、送ります。だいたいは、はがきです。
相手の健康を気遣い、元気に夏を過ごしてほしいという想いで書かれています。
また、自分の最近の様子、何をしているかなどを簡単に書いて、自分の無事を知らせたりします。

送る時期もだいたい決まっています。
暑中見舞いを送るのは7月7日から8月7日（立秋）ごろまでです。
それを過ぎると今度は、残暑見舞いを送ります。これはだいたい8月末ごろまでに届くように送ります。両方送らなくてもいいです。どちらかだけでいいです。
残暑見舞いは「残暑お見舞い申し上げます」で始めます。

暦の上では秋とはいえ、なお暑い日が続いておりますが、皆さま、お元気でいらっしゃいますでしょうか。
お陰様で、わたくしたち家族全員、夏バテもせずつつがなく暮らしております。
夏のお疲れが出るころですので、どうぞお身体にはお気をつけて健やかにお過ごしくださいますようお祈り申し上げます。
　　令和4年　立秋」

期限までに送ることができなかったときは、挨拶のことばをちょっと変えれば大丈夫です。
たとえば、「秋晴れの候」や「秋冷の候」のように、その時の季節の挨拶から書きます。

相手の健康を気遣っている気持ちが、その人に届くことが大切ですから、形や時期にとらわれず、気になったときに　ペンをとってみるのもいいかもしれません。きっと、その便りを受け取った人は　とても喜んでくれているでしょうから。
