A Chinese Zen Story 八风吹不动 / bā fēng chuī bú dòng 一屁打过江 /yī pì dǎ guò jiāng Su Dongpo  (苏东坡) was a famous poet who practiced Buddhism. He had a good friend who was a Zen Master.  One day Su Dongpo wrote a poem to show that he was quite advanced in his buddhism practice. 稽首天中天,毫光遍大千。 八风吹不动,端坐紫金莲。 (Bowing with my highest respect, to the deva of devas, whose fine light illuminates the whole universe . The eight winds cannot move me, for I am sitting upright on the golden purple lotus blossom. ) (The deva of devas here figuratively refers to the Buddha.) (The Eight Winds are the eight worldly conditions: gain and loss, fame and defame; praise and blame, pleasure and pain.) Su Dongpo, wishing to get his friend’s endorsement, asked his attendant to send the poem to his Zen Master friend who lived across the river. After reading the poem , the Zen Master wrote on it one word as his comment:  Fart! When the attendant came back with the comment, feeling insulted, Su Dongpo was ablaze with anger. He immediately boarded a boat and crossed the river to argue with the Zen Master. Upon seeing Su Dongpo, the Zen master laughed: “The Eight Winds can not move you, but one fart sent you across the river!” 祝你有愉快的一天!端坐紫金莲。
