This is why I love Spanish... "Fulano" is a placeholder name that aludes to someone whose name is unknown or to avoid mention their name. It is also used to refer to an undetermined/imaginary person in a hypothetical situation. For example:
"Mi perro le ladra a todo, pasa Fulano y mi perro corre y le ladra" (My dog barks to everything, Fulano walks by and my dog runs and barks at him).
If more hypothetical people is needed, you can add Mengano and Zutano (or Zultano). Always in that order.

You can change their genders by replacing the last vowel for an A (or a X, or an E, but that's a long story).
It is also very popular to use them with diminutive: fulanito, menganita, etc.
