'I'm going to the UK' suggests that this trip is arranged - it has dates, flights are booked, accommodation is booked, etc. 'I'm going to go to the UK' suggests that this is a plan, still an idea in your head. It may be further in the future and it's not arranged yet. 'I am going to do something' is always used when the activity can be done without arrangements being made in advance.
