I think the basic is being mentally independent, everyone should see himself or herself as a person who can live on their own. You are the owner of your life, no one should be responsible for your life. Besides, being honest and being supportive, and don't ask for absolute equality in a relationship. Stick to your principles and say no when things cross your bottom line, mutual respect is so important in any relationship.
