One of the most important foundations of English grammar is Subject + Verb + Object (SVO) word order. Unlike many other languages, English relies heavily on word order to show meaning. If the order changes, the meaning can change — or the sentence can become confusing.
In this community lesson, we’ll break down how SVO works and why it matters.
First, we’ll review the basics:
Subject → Who or what is doing the action
Verb → The action
Object → Who or what receives the action
For example:
She reads books. (subject: she, verb: reads, object: books)
The company hired new employees.
I watched the movie.
With this basic structure you can add additional words to be more detailed in your communication and create more complex sentences.
For example:
She reads books every night before bed.
The company hired new employees last month to expand the team.
There are common mistakes learners make, such as:
Reversing verb and object
Dropping the subject
Translating word order directly from their native language
Understanding SVO is not just about grammar it’s about clarity. When your sentence structure is strong, your ideas become easier to understand.
Book a lesson if you want to build a solid grammatical foundation and speak with more confidence.
