Hi, I’ve seen the phrase “street clever” many times. How do you perceive it, it’s a positive thing or disapproving ?

Hi Yuan,
I agree with Dan!
I also want to add that in American English we sometimes use "street smart" in opposition to "book smart." Book smart means you are super good at academics BUT in the social world/the real world might not be that smart. People who are "book smart" have more theoretical knowledge and people who are "street smart" have more practical knowledge.

(I have more often heard the phrase "street smart.")
It has both positive and negative aspects. It means that the person lives in an urban environment where crime and illegal activities exist, and knows how to protect themselves, survive, and succeed in that environment.
That might be a good thing. On the other hand, a person who is "street smart" might be taking part in some illegal activities because it's just part of what you need to do in that subculture, which would be a bad thing.

and "streetwise" is often used in the UK. it is positive, describing someone who knows how to cope with the difficulties of modern city life.

‘Street smart’ is common and we informally talk about ‘having smarts’ as well. That means know how to manage a difficult real-life setting well. But ‘street clever’ sounds very awkward to me as an American.

We usually say steet smart. It means that you are able to adapt to or handle difficult or dangerous situations. Often ones that would happen in cities. Usually it is use in a positive or even natural way but it could have negative connotations depending on the context
