A line can be classical in diction, or it may use common language. The first line of this poem, “The red bloom of spring has fallen from the forest,” is very colloquial in flavor in Chinese, but this does not detract from its beauty at all. The word here translated as “fallen” seems perfectly common, and yet what sympathy it conveys! The trees had been full of beautiful spring blossoms of the brightest red, dressing the whole forest in a glorious raiment of the most beautiful colors of the best season of the year, but now suddenly all this is withered and gone.
