When I first saw it, I didn't believe it was food either. Nevertheless, "Natto" is very popular. I said negative thoughts about "Natto," to be honest, I'm a fan of it. Good work. In France we have our fare share of smelly and strong cheeses (Maroilles, Munster), some of them, among my favorites, are even blue-veined (Roquefort, Fourme D’ambert). So I think I could eat Natto as well but I never had the occasion to do so, let alone finding some in Europe.
