verbs patterns - difficulty Hello everyone, I don't understand some verbs patterns: remember - stop - try . They with -ing or to -infinitive have a change in meaning.
Exemples:
1) I remember posting the letter // I remembered to post the letter
2) I stopped drinking coffee. // I stopped to drink a coffee
3) I tried to sleep // I tried counting sheep and drinking a glass of warm milk

What's the difference? :-S
Qualcuno riesce a spiegarmi la differenza? Se in italiano è anche meglio!!

Thank you, Grazie. Valentina

1. I remembered posting the letter = I posted the letter. Then, later, I remembered that I had done this.

= Mi sono ricordato di aver mandato la lettera.

I remembered to post the letter = I remembered that I needed to post the letter. Then I posted it.

= Mi sono ricordato di mandare la lettera.

2. I stopped drinking coffee = I drank coffee. Then, I stopped.

Mi sono smesso di bere caffè.

I stopped to drink coffee =  I was working for (for example). Then, I stopped (working). I drank coffee.

(Per esempio) Mi sono smesso (di lavorare) allo scopo di bere il caffè.

3.  I tried to sleep =  My goal was to fall asleep. I attempted to fall asleep, but I wasn't able to do this. It was too difficult.

I tried counting sheep and drinking a glass of warm milk = My goal was to fall asleep. Counting sheep and drinking warm milk were experiments - these were possible solutions that I tried in an attempt to fall asleep.

Here's a couple more examples:

(i) I tried to contact my friend = Il mio obbiettivo

I tried phoning her. I tried texting her. I tried messaging her on Facebook = Esperimenti/Modi per raggiungere il mio obiettivo

Modi per raggiungere il mio obiettivo

(ii)   I'm going to try to stop smoking = Il mio obbiettivo

I'll e-cigarettes. I'll try nicotine patches. I'll try hypnotherapy = Esperimenti/Modi per raggiungere il mio obiettivo

Spero di essere stata d'aiuto.

Hi there, Valentina!

I am not a teacher, but I'll do my best to help :)

So, let me explain each of the situations.

1) Remember posting – it is basically that you have already done it and now you remember your action in the past.
Remebered to post – it means, that you didn't forget to do something before the actual action happened.

2) Stopped drinking – so, for example, drinking coffee in the morning (or any other action) was your regular habbit, but then you decided not to do it anymore. You don't drink any more coffee in the morning now. That is "stop doing" thing.
Stopped to drink – that means, you were in the middle of an action, when you decided to drink coffee. For example, while you were walking to your school/university/office, you saw a cafe and stopped to drink a coffee.

3) Things get tough here, so I hope someone corrects it, if I get it wrong.
So, tried to sleep – it's like you tried, you made an effort, but in the end it didn't work out and you didn't sleep after all.
Tried counting/drinking – that means, you tried something new, it was a new experience and you don't know the results of it yet.
The -ing form after "try" can also be used to give advice. For example: You can't do this task? Try asking your friends for help.

Hope it helps! If anything is unclear, feel free to ask again, I will be glad to answer :)

There is no distinction in meaning. It is just a matter of grammar...

Gerunds and infinitives come from verb forms but function as nouns. A gerund or an infinitive can be a direct object of a verb.

use a gerund after a following verb:avoid, cant stand,discuss,dislike,dont mind,enjoy,feel like,practice,stop,quit,suggest,finish,keep,go on

infinitive after:agree,be sure,decide,choose,expect,hope,learn,need,seem,plan,

other verbs can be followed by both of them:begine, continue, hate, like, love, prefer, start
