In Spanish why is it "Cual es la fecha de hoy?" and not "Que es la fecha de hoy?"

Hi, I'm from Spain, yes, the correct is "¿Cúal es la fecha de hoy?", is wrong "¿Qué es la fecha de hoy?" but you can say "¿Qué fecha es hoy?"

Well: ¿Cúal es la fecha de hoy? and ¿Qué fecha es hoy?

Not well: ¿Qué es la fecha de hoy?

It's more common to say ¿Que día es hoy?

For the questions: ¿Cúal es la fecha de hoy? or ¿Qué fecha es hoy?  and  ¿Que día es hoy?. We have differents forms to answer..!!. For example: 

1). ¿Cúal es la fecha de hoy? ¿Qué fecha es hoy?  answer : Hoy es 28 de Octubre de 2016.

2) ¿Que día es hoy? answer: Hoy es Viernes
