Most articles online say that sarcasm is not widely used in Japan but I also hear that young Japanese students use irony(皮肉 ) and sarcasm. Sarcasm is when you say the OPPOSITE or different from what you actually mean. For example, your friend sees a $100 shirt and says, 'Wow, that's really cheap" when he/she really means, "thats way too expensive." I'm wondering if the Japanese actually DO use sarcasm, especially if younger generations do.

There's a proverb called "京のお茶漬け(Chazuke in Kyoto)" in our district. Kyoto is said to be the most conservative city in Japan. Kyoto people make it a manner to say "Please don't hurry to go home, would you like a dish of o-chazuke?" when a visitor leaves their house. (Chazuke is a kind of simple supper. tea poured rice). But if the visitor said "thank you" and waited the chazuke, Kyoto people laugh at the person secretly saying "The visitor doesn't know the manner!".

There's also a word "ほめ殺し(praise-killing). The LDP (Japanese conservative party) had a internal conflict about 30 years ago. Abe Shintaro (Father of today's prime minister) made a right-wing party working under him to assault his rival Takeshita Noboru. The right-wing party started demonstrations in front of the Takeshita's house every day. Saying "Mr. Takeshita does anything for money! He's a genius of earning money! Let's make him the next prime minister!". ...Nobody could stop them. The low had no power either. Because they were just "praising" Takeshita. This method of slander had been named as "ほめ殺し" since then.

Generally to say, conservative people always use the language in this way in Japan. They tend to say opposite of what they really think of. Especially in order to make sarcastic remarks. I don't like this culture at all. As for me, being straightforward is the best.

In Japan we are not used many sarcasm.Especially expensive →cheep.Because we don't like act of boasting.But there is cheep→expensive a little time while super close friends.

Thank you for your comment!!! I learned a lot from it, such as the praise-killing and Chazuke proverb (If I ever go to Kyoto, I'll remember that). I also agree that being straightforward is the best and I'm glad a majority of Japanese people do too!!!
