Hello everyone.

So I have been offered a PhD position in Vienna and I will be moving there in three or four months. The working language of the institute is English and it seemed from my brief time there that people on the streets knew at least a little bit of English. But naturally, I will be spending several years there and as a result I would like to learn German. My current knowledge of the language is zero, I am a complete beginner. I have some prior experience with language learning, having a C1/C2 level in Spanish but in terms of German, I am starting from the very beginning.

So I would like to hear some opinions from learners about which courses or textbooks they have found particularly useful. I particularly would like one which focuses on the pronunciation of the language if possible, as that was something that served me well with Spanish. And then, as I understand it, although I could be wrong, German has different dialects which may or may not be mutually intelligible to other speakers. I wonder if someone could comment on the Viennese dialect in particular, and how it compares for example with the German spoken in different parts of Germany.
