How should we avoid cliches for an English learner? When I step deep into English. I noticed many English expressions are out of my expectations. One of the reasons is that what I've learnt are out of time. But as an English learner, I totally have no idea about if a certain expression out of date. Would you like to recommend some relevant resources? Or what are your related experiences?

Hello Lawrence,

Very interesting question indeed! I believe that when it comes to expressions, it is better to learn them naturally rather than studying or memorizing them. You may try to watch new movies or even Youtube videos about topics that interest you, they will provide with a wide range of up-to-date expressions in their appropriate context.

Let me know if you would like me to suggest specific things for you to watch :)

Watching series does help. I heard new expression like "to throw someone under the bus" 3 series in a row.

If you read antiquated books with old, or less used, expressions in them, then don't worry. You will be enriching English by keeping them alive (sometimes). (Other times), it is better to leave them sleeping in their grave. Either time, your English will be interesting.
