I recommend getting used to using tones. They play a big role in Chinese.

1,    1-2 lessons to know/learn about Pinyin and 4 tones----which takes you to all chinese words and phases

2,     while  practicing Pinyin and tones a lot (reading Chinese Characters), you can also learn  how interesting Chinese Character is, cause many of them are looks like a pic. that you can see/guess the meaning of some of them

3.   learning greetings, basic usefull phrases~  new Chinese Characters, writting skills etc. are happening simultaneously.

4.  Learning+practicing...  learning+practicing...  :)

If you speak eng, you can relocate to China and teach there and study Chinese in the same time. There is a huge demand for teachers
