Do people speak out loud in your language?
Coming from the south of Spain I realised that people had to tell me all the time to speak quietly, specially when I was living in Paris. I feel relieved when I have been sorrounded by Arabic speakers as they also spoke quite loud =). Do you think this is a Mediterranean feature? Wht's your opinion?

Actually it is dependent upon the place .
Also in my country . Some people speak louder and some people speak in lower voice .
In my country there are 29 province . In desert are or rural areas people speak louder . In hills area people speak in lower voice it may be nature . Sometimes in city area people speak faster than rural area .
But sometimes it depends on the climate, geographycal area .
But I am not sure it

I think it's a Spanish thing, Celeste.

I've travelled a lot around Europe, and Spain is definitely the loudest country of the continent. Spaniards speak louder than other Europeans, so you have to make your announcements louder and play your music louder so as to be heard, which in turn means that you have to ...... You get the picture!

I remember once entering a largish supermarket here in the UK. Instead of hearing the barely audible murmur of 'normal volume' voices, mingled with the usual sounds of supermarket (background music, cash registers), all I could hear was Spanish! Spanish seemed to be filling the air and bouncing off the walls and ceilings. I wondered what was going on - was the supermarket full of hundreds of Spaniards having a wild party? No. None were to be seen. Eventually, I tracked down where the sound was coming from - three Spanish teenagers having a conversation in one aisle.

I am from Hungary and foreigners say we are generally more reserved (even to the extent a Spaniard would call "cold"). Indeed, if I listen to tourists, I can say that most foreigners speak more loudly than Hungarians. Some people in Hungary also do speak loudly, but it is seen as not well-educated behavior.

Spanish people tend to be especially loud. In fact, I realized there's a difference even between Madrid and Andalusia. When I'm there, somehow it doesn't matter to me - I'm absorbed into the atmosphere. It seems that this is a Mediterranean habit.

I am from Israel and people do speak loudly here. It was kind of shock for me because originally I am from Belarus where people are very quiet. So, definitely, Mediterraneans speak loudly.
