Top 3 Ways to Improve your English Listening Skills
Hi everyone,

Here is a video from Speak English With Vanessa (thanks to Rewin Alif for the recommendation!) in which gives good advice on 3 ways to improve your English listening skills https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2xXQa6C55Q;

I have summarised her advice below. Which pieces of advice do you use? Which are the most useful in your opinion?

1) Listening and reading subtitles in English.

Watch the programme with no subtitles the first time and then watch it again with the subtitles.

You can also watch the first time with subtitles and then a second time with no subtitles (both ways are good practice).

Use resources like Netflix, ted.com and the BBC Learning English app as these all have good quality subtitles.

It is much more useful to practise using subtitles in English, rather than your native language.

2) Focus on material that you can understand 70% of

If you understand 70% of the material, this means that you understand the general idea but it will also challenge you to improve.

If you understand less than 70% of the content, you should practise using easier material. Practise with the easier stuff a lot and then try slightly more difficult material when you are ready.

3) Dictation

Try listening to one sentence carefully and then try to copy it exactly. This is a useful exercise to focus on listening to small details.

Of course, practise this with something that has perfect subtitles so that you can check it you were right or not.

This is a good exercise but you don't need to do it every day. you could do it every couple of days/once a week.

This is an activity to only do for a short time (do it with one or two sentences only). Obviously, if you tried to do a dictation of the entire Game of Thrones seriously, it would be extremely boring haha.
