Curiosity is a blessing and a curse: When is CURIOSITY bad?

The word “curiosity” by definition is a strong desire to know or learn anything.
It is human nature to be curious, especially babies and young people. This also applies to language learning and culture. That is why I love reading and asking questions so that I will learn more about the culture of others. However, I have encountered people who have unnecessary curiosity towards people, their personal lives and who they are. That is when I think that curiosity is bad. I felt a great amount of discomfort when someone I met on the internet interrogated me and talked to me as if I was a romantic partner, a family member and a close person in his life. Even people who seem so “normal” in the beginning. Our curiosity towards others must have a line, even if we cannot clearly define it.

I for one do not care what celebrities eat or do, even more with friends and family. Who has the time to know what family members do? Even if I did have the time, I strongly believe that some things should be left in the imagination. I also do not like to know everything.I think that would be a curse and not a blessing. To be omniscient is a state I would not want to achieve. I would not want to be curious about people all the time, even those I am romantically involved with. I believe that curiosity is important but too much of it has the counter effect.

When is curiosity bad?
Have you met someone who is unnecessarily curious?
What do you do if someone is unnecessarily curious about you? Are you flattered or scared?

@Phil  That's true. One must not forget to know oneself first instead of others.

Hi Flo. In my oppinion curiosity and laziness were the basis of the civilization. If the prehistoric hominids weren't curious and lazy they would stay on the trees forever and for example they would never invent the fire etc. :-)

This is a really interesting philosophical question. I believe curiosity is generally positive, in that it motivates us to learn more and be more ourselves. Over-curiosity, on the other hand, seems to be the opposite — far from wanting to be more, overly-curious people only pay attention to everyone except for the one person they are truly responsible for — themselves. So while it’s important to pay attention to the world, it’s even more important to pay attention to oneself, isn’t it?
