If you live in a country of your target language , does it help you to speak better?

Nope.

I know Americans who lived in Mexico or Colombia for 4 years and don't speak any Spanish because they only socialize with other English speakers and live in districts where waiters / cashiers / etc speak English to them.

I know Viet people living in Australia who speak English poorly because their roommates and their friends are Viet, and they speak Viet every day

Living in the country that speaks your target language only helps if you socialize and revolve your life around the language. Otherwise, it's totally useless.

I would also say the short answer is 'yes'.

In reality, it depends on many factors.

  • Are you motivated to use the foreign language.
  • If you live in a situation where you can continue using your mother tongue, it can be a detriment.
  • Do you work in the foreign language? Do you socialize in the foreign language?
  • What is your learning style? If you don't remember new concepts well when they are presented orally, it will slow your progress.
  • Are there any drawbacks or negative experiences associated with trying to speak your target language.

On the other hand, being immersed in the language, having to use only your target language to communicate allows you to concentrate on your weaknesses and ask for help learning with regularity. You can learn from everybody you meet from business associates to health professionals to civil servants to shopkeepers, even fellow shoppers are likely to help you out. Trying to find native speakers of your target language in your own country is time-consuming, and difficult.

I imagine it depends a little. My Spanish gets considerably better every time I go to Spain.

I don't think I've ever managed to say more than a few words in German in Berlin though. Everyone wants to practise their English (it doesn't help that my German is truly, truly terrible).
