Casi casi :-) . La forma correcta sería:

Estuve viendo el fútbol (o también: estuve viendo fútbol)

Past Continuous --> V. Estar en pasado simple conjugado + gerundio

Eg: I was doing my homework --> Estuve haciendo mis deberes

You can say "veía el fútbol" or "estaba viendo el fútbol". Specially if you speak about it as a circumstance to introduce other events that happened while you were watching football. "Estaba viendo el fútbol cuando de repente empezó a llover" (I was watching football when suddenly it started raining).

"Yo estuve viendo el fútbol" can be translated as "I watched football" or "I was watching football". It doesn't consider the action as a circumstance in relation to other events that happened one after the other while that circumstance happens, as "estaba viendo el fútbol" does. It's usually used to mean that you were doing the action continuously for a prolonged time and then you stopped doing it. When you say "estuve leyendo el libro" it means that you started reading the book for some time and then you stopped, leaving the book unfinished. 

Anyway you must also consider that what Americans call "football" is usually called "rugby" by Spanish speakers. "Fútbol" is what Americans call soccer and Britons call "football".

"Estuve mirando el partido de fútbol."

Depende de lo que quieras decir pero podría ser 

* Estuve viendo Fútbol (En preterito)

*Estoy viendo fútbol (En presente)

Depende de lo que quieras decir. Estuve o estaba y también puedes utilizar veía.

1.Estaba viendo el fútból y de repente se me rompió la tele. (watching football on the tele)

2.(Yo) veía el fútbol mientras mi hermana hablaba por teléfono.
