In Japanese culture, we are always ‘polite’ first and then ‘friendly’ later. This article is about speaking informal Japanese, on the supposition that you already know formal speech, and are ready to take your Japanese to the next level!

Hello Yuri. I think your article is great. A few years ago, I finished a Japanese course. I got the complete grammar panorama, but my vocabulary is not very wide, so I lack enough fluency. For absolute beginners, it is important to know that formal Japanese should be used when talking to strangers. But in real life, at least in Chile, most students start learning Japanese because they like manga. I understand that in Japan most kids first learn the informal style and then the formal style. In these two cases, they start by the informal style. Besides, dictionaries don't include verbs in the formal style, just in the informal or jisho style.  In my case, I was taught the formal style first. I must confess that the syntax of the formal style is not very clear to me. It is much easier to make complex sentences when one already knows the informal style.

So I am wondering what would you recomend to young learners who want to read manga on listen to music ( and don't have the need to talk to strangers in formal situations ). Also, it would be interesting to know how would you teach Japanese syntax just with the formal style.

今日もこの記事を読んで、とてもいい勉強になりました。

個人的にはインフォーマルの方がわりと簡単だと思います。我々外国人にとって、助詞の使い方はとても複雑で、会話で助詞を省くのはとても便利です。(笑)

Nice article! it's concise with simple examples. I did notice that the formal verb chart in section 2 has a minor error regarding the 来る conjugations. Past-tense and Negative conjugations are switched.
