Learning Hungarian - Need a bit of inspiration

Hi All

I have been learning Hungarian for about 4 months with a tutor and I am enjoying the challenge. The thing is.......I don't feel like its really sticking. I love the country, I am back in Budapest in a fortnights time for 3 days. I like my tutor, she is patient and very encouraging but something is missing.

I can only afford 1 lesson a week so what I am looking for is a way of keeping what I am being taught alive between lessons, does anyone have any ideas?

Also, anyone looking for a practice partner or an exchange, let me know!

Cheers

Tom

Hello Tom!

I am learning Hungarian too. I study everyday by myself then with a tutor. I also have chat partners. I am not yet very confident with speaking. At least with chatting, I have a bit of time to think about what I am going to say. Dig around my brain for a bit. :) I find that Hungarians are very nice and patient to someone learning their language. They are very encouraging. (My boyfriend is Hungarian but we usually speak English because I am always running out of things to say...I promise to study hard so I can speak to him in his language. He also teaches me stuff, not only about the language and I love the Hungarian culture more now)

Good luck to you!

I have similar problem. I am learning Hungarian for about a month and I found the remedy. I treat Hungarian as an exotic, Asian language but with Latin alphabet. Whole Hungarian grammar seems to be complete mess, but only in the beginning. I realised that in many areas, Hungarian is like Turkish or even Korean. And I like these countries and languages, too.

In Poland, there's a lot of foreign products in stores with multilingual instriptions, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, mostly. So, I try to read those inscriptions. I learn some words because of that, reading the composition of one product.

Watching TV is pretty hard, in the beginning when you don't understand anything. But it helps. One can watch Duna TV and other state stations, online, option "elo":

I can also recommend Hungarian version of wikipedia, it is a good choice for every langauge.

Hi! I think listening to music & watching films are the best way to acquire a language. After a while, you realize you understand more and more from each song/film. It worked for me when I was learning foreign languages.

What about listening to Hungarian music? zeneszoveg.hu and other sites have the lyrics for lots of songs. Some people swear by learning languages this way, because it can be more motivating than reading.
