Words-parasites

Do you have any words-parasites in your own or target language and how you get rid of them? I noticed that I use "quite" in English very often. Never thought that words-parasites can occur in non-native language.

Note that the correct term is 'parasite words'.  This follows the rule of how we form compound nouns in English. The second element in the compound is what the thing actually is ( in this case, they're words), and the first element - usually a singular noun - gives more information about the nature of the thing ( in this case, that they are words which behave like parasites). Similar examples are 'loan words' or 'dialect words'.

And some examples?  kind of, sort of, y'know

it hapened to me too, especialy with french where i use frequently the term "Donc", with english i think that i'm using too much the sentence "you know".

What is the solution? I think that 2 things could help: first, improving our vocabulary, second, concentrating and thinking of what we will say befor starting to talk And speaking slowly.

I use a bunch of them. I once heard from an NPR talk show that there was a study that revealed the existence of a certain correlation between the use of the so-called '' parasite word '' and how smart a person is : the smart ones use them quite often. Just think about it . When you have resort to words such as 'like,Hum,I mean' you actually give yourself some valuable moments to come up with the wisest thing you can say . But, make no mistake about it , there is a certain limit above which you're only annoying the listenner and it makes you look dumb :D

'Like'

Joseph O Connor has a brilliant piece written about the overuse of 'like'. If you google his name and 'like' you will find a podcast/audio file.
