IELTS Preparation: punish children or not Topic: Some people think it is necessary to punish children in order to teach them the difference between right and wrong. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer. If you agree, what kind of punishment do you think should be given to children by parents and teachers? Give reasons for your answer. Nowadays, the importance of children education has been widely recognized throughout the world. This raises questions about whether punishment should be allowed to teach children the difference between right and wrong. Although some people are against punishment, I personally believe that some forms of punishment are essential and should be permitted. People who oppose punishment claim that it could exert detrimental influence on children’s psychological development. They assert children who are often punished could lose self-confidence and even develop hatred to society. However, they are oversimplifying the situation. Actually, parents or teachers do not simply punish children. Rather, they explain to children why what they have done is wrong and what kind of person they are supposed to be. And punishment is used as a supplement to make children remember the lessons. As a result, children are more likely to understand the circumstances rather than get to hate society. Yet others argue that punishment is crucial in education provided that it does not threaten the health of a child. For example, such punishments as withdrawal of privileges of watching TV or playing video games are acceptable. For one thing, these punishments teach children the concept of responsibility. This means a person have to take the responsibility of whatever he/she has done. In the long term, everyone has to be responsible for his/her own life. Knowing this in an early age is helpful in these children’s later lives. For instance, theft is supposed to be put into prison. Only when a child is punished for stealing even an eraser could he/she realize theft is wrong and he/she has to pay the cost for stealing. Those children, more often than not, turn out to be honest people when grow up. For another, punishment could be more memorable than mere education by words. It is because the cost people pay for their misdemeanor makes the lessons they learned memorable. To conclude, punishment exclusive of corporal punishment is necessary in children education since it teaches children to be responsible and is an effective method.

IELTS Preparation: Punish Children or Not

Topic: Some people think it is necessary to punish children in order to teach them the difference between right and wrong. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer. If you agree, what kind of punishment do you think should be given to children by parents and teachers? Give reasons for your answer.

I am inclining to agree with the fact that there are situations when children have to bear the burden of responsibilities for their actions. First of all, the threat of punishment gives children to think twice about the made up in their minds patterns of behavior whether the pattern is considered to be normal or deviant.

Secondly, punishment desciplines children's hard-to-control ego. Keeping in mind so called "stick" restricts a child from being irresponsible and violent towards his/her family, friends, neighbours and just occationally met people.

Thirdly, punishment partially plays the part in creating a concept of respect in children. To be able to respect something, you have to learn how to love something and keep it safe. Being so carefree, children tend to forget to keep the toys safe or to put away the clothes or make the bed. The reminding of punishment is the first signal in their heads to fix the situations.

In spite of positive effect of punishment, there are negative ones. Punishment is not the only and first means to teach children how to be a part of society. Side effect of the punishment can be low self-confidence in a child and consequently lack of motivation in studying, in having hobbies, in creating new games or activities. Children might be afraid of the punishment so much that it prevents them from making new friends, sharing their ideas and being themselves after all. I consider physical punishment and moral abuse are extremely unfavourable in any education. Mild types of punishment like reprimand, taking away some privileges, serious adult talks are good tools to sculpt a human being out of the raw clay.

Nice writing and a nice topic. I just stare at the kids to show my displeasure, and then speak calm. I ask them how we can make it all better. Ask them what they need to make it better. And, stress their responsibility in making it better. Sometimes must isolate them. Never hit them.

@Ganesh, thanks for your view~~it's useful to me, especially the idea that punishment should be proportionate to the type and extent of their wrongdoings, and also the idea about verbal scolding. Thanks~~and by the way, i admire your level of written English!:)

I think, sometimes punishment becomes inevitable while upbringing children. The only thing one should keep in mind that it should not be physical primarily. The parents should take their children into confidence and make them aware of their wrongdoings first. The children should be forgiven first. If they go on repeating their wrong deeds, they should be punished. Of course, the type of punishment depends upon the type of mistakes they have done. Still, they should be knowing why they are being punished for. Making children do some work, not talking to them, keeping them isolated for a certain period, not giving them any rewards or allowances, etc. are some milder forms of punishment that can be used primarily. Verbal scolding, if done, should not be too harsh. Physical punishment should only be used as a last resort. It should always be remembered that punishments are given for the betterment of the children and to make them aware of their responsibility. Properly imposed punishments actually help in achieving this goal.
