When is your name day? I know that name days are not recognized in a lot of countries. The Czechs are lucky – we celebrate them. What does “name day” mean? A simple explanation is that a name or sometimes two names are allocated to a certain day of the year. For example, my name is Jitka and it means that all Jitkas in the Czech Republic will celebrate their name days on December 5. I love name days. Name days are important for the Czechs as birthdays and we celebrate our name days similarly. However, name days have an advantage – a lot of people know about it. It is easy to forget someone’s birthday unless you have it in your memory or diary but you can always check when it is your family members’, relatives’ and friends’ name day. People can see it in a calendar, it is mentioned on the radio or just walking around a florist can help get to know whose name day it is today. I am looking forward to my name day!
