In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.
In several nations, the youth today is encouraged to take a gap year to work or travel after graduating from high school. This trend becomes more popular than ever before. Obviously, a gap year can have advantages and disadvantages for young people.
In the first place, one-year working or travelling can breeds young people’s personal growth. A gap year gives the youth a chance to live independently. By having a job, they gain their first salary and learn how to value money. At that time, they also begin to comprehend the labour of their parents to support him. Furthermore, a gap year with travelling can help newly grads broaden their minds. It is an opportunity for them to get out of their comfort zones and see the world. They visit new place and make friends. As a result, they can gain a deeper insight into their inner self. Needless to say, a gap year can make young minds become more mature. They, therefore, may have a clear career orientation when the year ends. It is striking that this gap year is like a stepping stone towards their future ahead.
On the other hand, there is no doubt that newly grads have to face many unsurmountable challenges in the real world. As young people are inexperienced, they are likely to get shocked with the blatant truths in this distorting world. For instance, some young grads are exploited when having their first job. Some of them get lost or lose money during travel. Eventually, their gap years turn into nightmares. It is highly likely that some young people suffers from hurt without the guidance and protection of adults. When they come back to normal life, some become spoilt or some may not find the balance, which eventually affect their development adversely.
In conclusion, every coin has two sides, and therefore, parents and the youth themselves should consider carefully before deciding to having a year off. The preparation and guidance of experienced people can help young people to take the most out of their gap year.
