Rocky Road to Dublin Hello! I am translating the good old Rocky Road to Dublin into Russian and it turned to be not as easy as it had first seemed. Dear native speakers, could you please explain me or paraphrase the following lines from the song. I would like to make sure I am getting it right. 1. The chorus. Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Whack-fol-lol-de-ra. 2. Enquirin’ for the rogue, They said my Connacht brogue, Wasn’t much in vogue, On the rocky road to Dublin. 3. Down among the pigs I played some funny rigs, Danced some hearty jigs, The water round me bubblin’, 4. Then with a loud hurray, They joined in the affray. We quickly cleared the way, For the rocky road to Dublin. Thank you!

Rocky Road to Dublin

Hello!

I am translating the good old Rocky Road to Dublin into Russian and it turned to be not as easy as it had first seemed.

Dear native speakers, could you please explain me or paraphrase the following lines from the song. I would like to make sure I am getting it right.

1. The chorus.
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.

Let us have some fun like hunting the hare run on the road as we are going to Dublin. "Whack-fol-lol-de-ra" does not mean anything at all.  It was chosen for the sounds.  It is like "scat" in Jazz (Jazz singing with nonsensical syllables), like "tra-la-la" etc.

2. Enquirin’ for the rogue, They said my Connacht brogue,
Wasn’t much in vogue, On the rocky road to Dublin.

They call me a rogue because of my Irish accent which is not popular (standard speech).  The English looked down on the Irish as peasants and unsavory people in the old days.

3. Down among the pigs I played some funny rigs,
Danced some hearty jigs, The water round me bubblin’,

He was having fun on a farm on his way to Dublin.  A Jig is a lively dance.

4. Then with a loud hurray, They joined in the affray.
We quickly cleared the way, For the rocky road to Dublin.

Perhaps the locals saw so much fun he has that they clapped their hands and joined in the fun. Then the singer/s left quickly for Dublin.

Thank you!
