Pang Gu Created Heaven and Earth(盘古开天地) It was long time ago when the sky and the earth were at first one blurred entity and the universe was in chaos. A giant named Pan Gu was born into the chaos and had been sleeping for one hundred and eight thousand years in it. One day, Pan Gu suddenly woke up. Finding hisself involved in the darkness, Pan Gu held his big axe to hack hard in front of him. With a big noise coming out, the thing which was light and clear gradually rose to become the heaven while the thing which was heavy and turbid gradually fell to become the earth. Since the heaven and the earth were separated, Pan Gu was afraid that they would be together again. Therefore, he held up his headreaching to heaven and kept his feet stamping on the earth. As heaven rose 10 meters every day and earth sank 10 meters every day, Pan Gu grew taller and taller. After many years, the heaven and the earth slowly took shape and Pan Gu was also so fatigued that he finally fell down on the ground. Pan Gu’s body changed a lot after that. The breath he breathed became fluttering clouds and winds of four seasons; His voice became the rumbling thunders; His eyes became the sun and the moon; His arms and legs became the four ends of east, south, west and north; His skin became the vast ground; His blood became the relentless movement of water in rivers and streams; His fine hair became the lush flowers and trees; His sweat became dew which benefited all things. Pan Gu, the forefather of our human beings, used his body to create a beautiful universe.

Confucius Serving an Apprenticeship Confucius became known as a scholar when he was young. However, he always thought what he had known was not enough, so he left his hometown Qufu(曲阜) at the age of 30 to find a great ideologist to continue his studies in Luoyang(洛阳). Traveling by night as well as by day, Confucius finally got to Luoyang after several months of having to sleep and eat under the open air. He saw a carriage parked outside the city and an old man with long white beard and a gown standing next to the carriage. Confucius thought to himself: It is the man that I am going to take as my teacher, so he came over to him, bowed down before him courteously and asked,”Excuse me, Sir, Are you Mr Dan?””You are?” the old man was bewildered that the young man recognized him at the first sight of him. Confucius then asked quickly,”I am coming to learn from you, please acknowledge me as your student.” Lao tzu(老子) replied,”You are Confucius! I learned that you are coming, so I have been waiting to receive you. Both of our knowledge are neck and neck, but why do you take me as your teacher? ”Confucius bowed to Lao tzu again when knowing that,”Thank you for waiting for me! Learn never stops. You are so knowledgeable and I am sure to make great progress on my study with the aid of your help.” From that day on, Confucius always stayed with his teacher and asked questions whenever he had difficulty understanding something. Lao tzu taught all that he had known to Confucius. People admired Confucius and Lao tzu for their learning and respect them for their characters.
