A Nice Book called 平如美棠 (Ping Ru, Mei Tang)

Ping Ru(平如) wrote this book when he was 90 years old. He memorized his wife, called Mei Tang(美棠) who was dead when she was 80 years old. The book has seven parts and almost every page has some illustrations painted by the writer. First part is the childhood of Ping Ru. He was born in a rich family, as Mei Tang. He wrote a lot of anecdotes about himself and his friends. When Ping Ru was young, his family often cooked traditional and delicious food during the Spring Festival. Ping Ru likes paining, so he draw all his favorite food which are vivid and colorful and adds them into the book.

In the second part, when the Sino-Japanese War broke out, Ping Ru joined an army and tried his best to protect his country with his fellow soldiers. Once he was stuck by some enemies, and he looking at the blue sky and the green mountain he thought this place would be a good place to bury his dead body. However, he escaped from death and then he returned home.

In the third part, Ping Ru met Mei Tang and married her. They often bought delicious snacks and fruits and then listened to songs or went to dance. That was the happiest time in their lives. In the fourth part, Ping Ru was caught for reform through labor(?) with no reason for 20 years. Mei Tang was persuaded to leave him, but she said： “I love him and I never leave him alone!” She took care of five young children and earned little money to live. Ping Ru could send letter to Mei Tang so he often(/repeatly) asked the conditions of their family in his letters. At that time, they were very poor in Shanghai but they never gave up connecting. That was the hardest time in their lives. When Ping Ruwas about 60 years old, he was allowed to go home.

In the part six, Mei Tang had a kidney disease for many years but she never consulted a doctor in order to save money. However, her sickness became worse in the next 10 years. When she was(/became) about 70 years old, she lost her senses. She often asked Ping Ru to do unreasonable things (/something unreasonable) but she forgot them soon. Ping Ru hoped he could help her and satisfying her(/her satisfy). After she was dead, he wrote this book to memorize her. He said that sea is not deep, the real deep thing is mind of Mei Tang.

* Please try to explain "reform through labor or Laogai" in the shortest way possible. Say something like "In the fourth part, he was caught for no particular reason and was sent to Laogai for 20 years which was a system of detention camps or working factories, similar to the Soviet Gulag". The reader has no idea what 'reform through labor' is and might consider it as a grammatical mistake; it was better to make it italic.

1) 平如 liked painting, so he used to draw all his favorite food in vivid colors and add them to the book. -- There is no tense agreement, but I think it does not violate the rule of grammer because time is processing.

2) 平如 was arrested for no apparent reason and sentenced to forced labor for 20 years. -- Masoud and I thought more explanation is required, but Louis corrected this sentence very well without more information.

3) .......they never gave up being in touch.

    美棠 had had kidney disease for many years, but she had never seen the doctor in order to save money.  -- We can enjoy the sentences of native speakers.

To Louis: Please answer(or comment) following questions. Thank you in advance.

1) You corrected the phrase "he was stuck by some enemies" as  "he was captured by some enemies". But I think the word 'surrounded' is more similar than 'captured'.

2) In the sentence "She babysitted for five young children", I think the word "raised up" is more appropriate than 'babysitted', because the latter word mean "to care for children when the parents are not home". I mean MOTHER, not a babysistter, took care of the "five children" until THEY HAVE GROWN UP.
