So on the first day when I got into the dissection lab, I was nervous: I had never seen a dead person before. Surprisingly, though, when I was handed the scalpel, I was adept at using it. I discovered that I have gifted hands.

You're saying there that you were nervous because you thought you might not have seen a dead person prior to entering the lab. It's a pretty easy mistake to make; you need a colon or a 'because' or something after the word 'nervous'.
