WRITING TASK - PROPOSAL

The council is planning to honour a local hero connected with our area. The local hero can be someone well known or an ordinary citizen. He/She could be still living or could be someone from history.
Residents are invited to send in proposals identifying a deserving person, giving reasons for their choice and suggesting a suitable way in which this hero should be honoured.

The following proposal is aimed at suggesting a local hero connected with our village who to my mind is well deserved to be honoured. In the words below, I will explain who he is, what he did, the main reason for my choice and an appropriate way he could be honoured.

My choice

Luka is well known by all the residents as the caretaker´s dog. He has been living with him in a small cottage inside the schoolhouse since I was a child.

The central heating of the school works with natural gas but as luck would have it, one frosty morning of (in) January it broke down and toxic gas started to spread all through the classrooms making both students and teachers fall fast asleep. Luka, who was prowling over there, could smell the strange odour and noticed something wrong was going on. Courageously and fearlessly he entered the classrooms, dragged some students outdoors and subsequently rushed into his owner´s house to warn him. Police and firemen were phoned and eventually all the teachers and students were soon evacuated so that nobody was seriously intoxicated.

My reason

It is highly likely that without Luka´s warning all our children and teachers would have died of gas intoxication. He saved their lives. I already know that your notice refers to a person not an animal but in my opinion, what makes him different? Nobody can deny now that dog is man´s best friend.

Honouring my hero

If my proposal of local hero is accepted I suggest changing the name of the school in Luka´s honour. I am entirely sure that “Luka Primary School” will be a fantastic name and everybody will agree.

(Who is living with whom?  Two indefinite pronouns in same sentence.  So change to: The dog has been living with him OR He has been living with the dog.)
