A Brazilian snow experience
I always, since I was a kid, had wished to see and feel the snow one day. I was born and raised in the south end of Brazil, in the state called Rio Grande do Sul, and it's a pretty cold state for the Brazilian standard winter weather.
The cold winter never was a problem for me, I used love the freezing Minuano's wind (as we called the cold wind in the south's winter), the fogy days, the frozen grass in the morning, my grandma' soup, I have good and romantic memories from these days.
I used hate the summer, it was kind of the hell to me, there is nothing that you can do to be fresh and dry, you are always sweating and your skin tan in the shape of your shirt, even though you just spend 1 minute in the sun. So one day, I got in Michigan during the winter, and every this feeling that I told you right now changed..
I got in the snow day in Michigan, I was very happy to see (And maybe touch..) the snow, I bought the most warm coat that I had met in Brazil (very expensive by the way), and even so I almost got frozen when I left the airport. During the way to the hotel, I couldn't feel my nose, my hands, my feet. That was difficult even to breath, and the wind near the Lake Michigan... the worst Minuano's that I never had felt. There was no cloths enough to keep me warm and protected from the wind, so I discover the Columbia' store and ever since I don't feel colder anymore, every Brazilian that I had met in Michigan has a Columbia's coat, it's kind of Brazilian brand now.
After one year living here I already have appropriate clothing to face the winter, but now there are new challenges like how to drive in the frozen roads in the snowing days, how to get some vitamin D (there is no sun for weeks), buy a snow blower or a shovel (to remove the snow in the front of your house), where to find the best hot chocolate in the town, how to set fire in the real fireplace and so on.
Now I really miss the Brazilian winter, but also I start to love my Brazilian summer. I had dreamt with beaches, the sunscreen smell, my skin burned of the sun, people in the streets. I hope this dream became true very soon.
