Is it true that “anyone who speaks the language can teach the language”?
On the understanding that in this phrase "anyone" is anyone who enjoys basic social and physical abilities to successfully communicate in English, I say yes. I would like to face the question using parenthood as a particular example of non-teachers teaching language.
The question we should ask is not if anyone can do so, but rather how well or efficiently is that person going to teach the language. It depends partly on what the learners needs or goals are. Parents, for instance, are one of the most important actors when it comes to learning our mother tongue (I believe). Moreover, even though most of them were not “trained language teachers”, in a sense, no one could have done their tasks any better. Does it mean that those parents would ace teaching English as a foreign language?
As you might imagine, not necessarily. This, I think, is because the learning goals and needs of foreign language students and children in their language acquisition process are different in terms of time and focus. That is why parents approach may not fit students’ objectives. That does not mean they cannot teach their language though.
This is related to the teacher techniques being used. We can say that without being conscious of it, parents have their own techniques they have developed over time. Interesting enough, new parents as new teachers, most likely change their teaching techniques over time.
