Teaching After I had been working on Italki for a while, I felt that I could do more and wanted a more direct connection with students. I did a google search for organizations in my area that have English classes and need teachers. The first link was to "Washington English Center" that had 3 month terms and needed volunteer English teachers. I was hesitant to apply because I had no experience other than my online teaching but still I filled out an application. I wrote about how I think that sharing a language can be fun, exciting and meaningful opportunity, one that I would enjoy and sent in in application, not expecting a response. Two weeks later, I got a call from the director asking if I could come in for an interview. It was incredible! I was shocked that they had chosen me. The lady was very nice, and the interview consisted of simple questions asking me what kind of teaching experience I had and why I wanted to be a teacher. At the end of the interview, the interviewer told me I had gotten the position and I would receive my start date and hire packet in the mail. I was a teacher. For 1 full day I was SUPER excited; overjoyed and just incredibly happy. Then, on the next day I was scared. I had many fears such as, "Would I be a good teacher?", "What if the students didn't like me?", "Was I qualified to teach students English?", "What if they don't understand me?". I prepared by looking over the entire curriculum and tried to come up with lessons that would be fun, and even games to help them. On my first day, i nervously walked into the office for my room assignment. My students would be all beginners. I received my class log and I went to my classroom to wait for my students to arrive. They seemed just as nervous as me!! BUT, I did not want them to feel nervous, because it is my job to help them, and I will try very hard to explain until they can understand. I acted cheerful, and silly and I explained each lesson in a clear way. I wrote many things on the board, and sounded out words throughout each lesson. This helped the students a lot. They liked repeating English words after me. It was such a great experience. Over the next few weeks, I noticed which students were having difficulties and which students were progressing at a fast pace. I tried to help everyone equally. That is one of the challenges of being a teacher. On my final day, I congratulated my students, they were all going to pass and graduate to the next level.
