It means something was understood. So on italki if I understand your correction I’ll say “that makes sense”. That’s the most basic usage. You can also say it if someone brings up a good point in an argument and you want to acknowledge that. An example of this usage in argument: P1: I don’t think phones are good for your health. P2: but I use my phone to talk to my friends, and that’s good for my mental health. P1: that makes sense, but they can still harm your productivity. Person 1 doesn’t agree with P2, but he thinks that p2 has made a good point. It doesn’t have to be used in argument either- I use it too when someone’s explaining a situation and I need a generic response just to show I understand. P1: I’m feeling really bad today. P2: I’m sorry, why is that? P1: my brother said something very mean to me. P2: but I thought your brother lived in another state? P1: we were talking on the phone. P2: ohh that makes sense. That’s how I think I’ve seen it used.

“Make sense” is a very common phrase in English. It is a way of describing a situation or suggestion that is entirely incorrect, is nonsensical, or that wasn’t expressed clearly. For example: I am going to spend all of my money now so that I cannot be robbed. It does not make sense because either way the person will not have any money. Or a friend who is new to the city describes the route they intend to take to work, which is too long and indirect. You could respond: that doesn’t make sense- there is a shorter route. Lastly, a person in an emergency situation is speaking too quickly and leaves out important details or isn’t speaking clearly. You tell them to relax and slow down... they are not making sense.
