Today it was overcast. The clouds were thin and translucent, allowing some sunlight to pass through. At home, I practiced singing and attempted to learn a new French song. The pronunciation was a real challenge, especially the “R” sound. I followed a YouTuber to practice it, but I then almost ended up spitting out sputum while trying. Words like “reve” or “creve” seemed totally impossible to me to do them right. I think I need to make a compromise: either I’ll do half-assing with those tricky pronunciations to muddle through, or I’ll quit on that song.

There are regional variations in the French R, but the standard modern R is a rasping sound produced in the back of the mouth. To produce the sound, start with a hard G as in the English word “go.” Then, move to the soft G in the Spanish word “amigo.” Then, force some air out during the G to get a gargling sound. A soft version of the gargling sound is a French R. Good luck!
